Cord-Cutting Spell for Releasing What No Longer Serves You
We form energetic cords with the people, relationships, and situations that matter most to us — and sometimes, those same cords keep us tethered long after they've stopped serving us. The Cord-Cutting Spell is a Wiccan ritual for consciously releasing that attachment, whether it's an old relationship, a past version of yourself, or a pattern you're ready to let go of. It's about releasing your own energy, not wishing anyone harm. Here's a basic guide to performing it.
Materials:
1 black candle (symbolizing release, protection, and absorbing negativity) or 1 white candle if you prefer a gentler focus
A length of string, ribbon, or thread
Scissors
A small piece of paper and a pen
Matches or a lighter
A safe, fire-proof surface or candle holder
Steps:
Prepare Your Space
Cleanse your space physically and spiritually. Tidy your surroundings, then use incense, sound, or visualisation to clear the energy of the area.
Name What You're Releasing
On the piece of paper, write down what the cord represents for you - a relationship, a role, a habit, or a chapter that's ended. Be specific and honest. Fold the paper and place it under your candle holder.
Tie the Cord
Take your length of string and tie one end loosely around your wrist, or simply hold it between both hands. As you do, visualise this string as the energetic cord connecting you to what you named - not to punish or blame, but simply to acknowledge the bond that existed.
Charge Your Intention
Hold the string and close your eyes. Visualise the connection as it's been, and allow yourself to feel whatever comes up. Let it be complicated if it needs to be. This spell doesn't require resentment or anger, only readiness.
Light the Candle
Place the candle in its holder and light it. You might say a simple affirmation such as "I release this cord with love and respect for what it taught me. I am free to move forward."
Cut the Cord
When you feel ready, cut the string with the scissors. Some practitioners cut it in one motion, others prefer a slower, more deliberate cut - do whatever feels most true to your own release. Sit with the two ends for a moment.
Meditation and Visualisation
Focus on the candle flame. Visualise the space where the cord used to be, and picture it settling into something calmer, lighter, and entirely your own. Meditate on this for as long as feels right.
Closing the Spell
Once you feel your intention has been set, let the candle burn out safely on its own if it's small, or extinguish it with the intent to relight it later to continue the spell. Never blow out the candle, as this can disperse your intention - instead, snuff it out or pinch the flame.
Dispose of the Remnants Properly
Once the candle has completely burned out, bury the cut string and any wax remnants outside, symbolising the release returning to the earth, or dispose of them in a way that feels respectful and significant to your practice.
Remember, the power of the spell comes from your intention and energy. This ritual is about your own release and healing - it isn't intended to influence or affect another person, only to support you in letting go of what the connection has come to mean for you.
Also, please always exercise fire safety when working with candles. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and ensure it's placed in a safe location away from flammable objects.
